HAIR & MAKE UP FOR HEADSHOTS

When scheduling kids headshots what is recommended for hair and make up? Should I hire your hair and make up artists or do it myself? Do kids even need make up? What about boys and teenagers? These are questions many people ask when they are booking their kids headshot session. Hair and make up otherwise known as "hmua" is an important subject to ponder when scheduling your kids headshot photographer.
My recommendation for kids headshots hair and make up is to ask yourself a few questions. Such as does my child have an even skin tone, or blemishes that should be covered, or dark circles under the eyes? And regarding hair...am I good with hair? Can I create different styles quickly for each change of clothing? Some people are great with hair and some aren't. Some people are good at matching skin tones with foundation and some aren't. Most make up artist know the "art" of make up and can conceal flaws or bring out the beautiful features of each person. And my hmua are very experienced with both make up and hair.
The general rule is we want the talent to look youthful and polished, but not made up. More on the natural side. A good make up artist should be able to do this. My hmua will ensure they are camera ready and will help with different hairstyles to fit the "look". Depending on the outfit we will create a look that fits that "character or type". Girl next door, edgy, quirky, academic, tomboy, spunky are all different hair styles. For boys, we may pull out a "period" look like a 50's boy, an edgy look like a skater, a boy next door, an Emo vibe or a quirky vibe. If you are not great with hair I recommend you add the hmua option to your shoot. If you are on a budget or comfortable and competent with hair, then it's fine to do it yourself. Mostly keep in mind that you are investing in the heashots and as long as you can "clean up" your child or change their hair and have it look great, then it's fine to do it yourself. Make sure to keep it on the natural side for make up, don't over do it...just bring out their beauty or tone down and or hide dark circles, redness or blemishes. And no eyeliner, eyeshadow or heavy eye make up. Natural and youthful is key.
